Why CELTA?
The Cambridge English Language Assessment Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is a practical English language teaching qualification. It gives you the essential knowledge, hands-on teaching experience and classroom confidence you need to qualify as a teacher of English as a second language (ESL).
Cambridge CELTA is accredited to level 5 on the UK National Qualifications Framework. Unlike other TESL, TEFL and TESOL qualifications, it is:
- assessed and awarded by Cambridge University
- more widely recognised internationally
- requested more frequently by employers.
FAQs: frequently asked questions about the CELTA
CELTA courses are suitable for teachers and aspiring teachers. You don’t need any previous teaching experience to apply for the course, but your level of English must be C1+ or C2 on the CEFR scale.
In total, the CELTA course consists of 120 hours. This includes 6 hours observation of experienced teachers and 6 hours of assessed teaching practice. Candidates also need to dedicate a minimum of 80 additional learning hours for pre-course preparation, reading, research, assignment writing, lesson preparation and record keeping.
The 5 main topics covered by the CELTA course are:
- learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
- language analysis and awareness
- language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- planning and resources for different teaching contexts
- developing teaching skills and professionalism.
Find out more about the CELTA syllabus on the Cambridge English website.
Assessment takes place throughout the course. Candidates submit a portfolio of all coursework including 4 written assignments and materials related to teaching practice.
The 4 written assignments focus on:
- analysing and responding to learners’ needs
- analysing language for teaching purposes
- teaching language skills
- reflecting on classroom teaching.
Highly qualified CELTA tutors will offer support to CELTA trainees throughout the course. During the course, they will be available for consultation and at least one face-to-face tutorial to discuss trainees’ progress.
Globally Speaking will also support candidates to find work by suggesting language schools worldwide that are recruiting CELTA qualified teachers.
